Sabum Patrick Abuel
2nd Dan Branch Instructor
Sabum-nim Patrick’s journey in the Martial Arts started off years ago in Townsville where he grew up. He trained up until the age of 10 then had to put his life’s ambition to become part of the world of martial arts on hold for several years to concentrate on his studies. Now living in Cairns, he began his search for a training school where he could continue his long overdue journey. And finally, in the early half of 2016, he found what he was looking for in the form of Rhee Taekwon-do. Fast forward a few years, after being granted his Black Belt, SBN Patrick was able to further excel in his training by achieving his 2nd Dan, subsequently gaining Instructor status. Now leading his own Dojang, Sabum-nim Patrick’s goal is to help create an understanding on why the Art of Self Defence is so important to our community & to our own lives. Believing with the right heart, mindset & willingness to learn, anyone from any age, gender, cultural background & skill level will be able to achieve what they’d like to from his classes.

I joined the Rhee Taekwondo family when I was in 5 th grade, back in 2018. Being a part of the Rhee Taekwondo family has helped me grow not only physically, but also mentally, and as a person. My goal as a Junior Black Belt Instructor is to support, encourage, keep a smile on the faces of all of my amazing peers, and turn training into something exciting that all of the students can look forward too after a bad day just as my instructors and seniors have done for me throughout my Rhee Taekwondo journey.

Even though I started Rhee Tae Kwon-Do on the 5th of October 2016, it feels like it has been a part of my life forever. Originally, my dad enlisted me into martial arts to boost my confidence and to give me an active activity to be involved in. So, at the age of 8 ½, I began my journey into learning one of the most disciplined martial arts ever. With the help of the most inspiring Black Belts and Instructors I have ever met, and with the constant reassurance and care from my parents, I managed to double my grade from white belt to yellow belt by the end of the year. It was a wonderful feeling, and I realised the reason it was so wonderful was because I had put the effort into achieving the best I could. So, over the next three years, I continued to put in this effort, and not only did my confidence in my skills with the art increase, but also my ability to build bonds with my fellow students and instructors. This is one of the reasons I have always loved Rhee Tae Kwon-Do – the comradery between everyone in your dojo is like having a family. This fact, along with the continued support of my parents and the advice of the many instructors I had the opportunity to learn from, allowed me to push through the most challenging parts of my training and, on the 19 th of June 2019, I became one of the black belts I had so long looked up to. My journey through the art of Rhee Tae Kwon-Do had reached a checkpoint, one that I would not forget, but one that would not stop my knowledge of the art growing and my skills to become refined. Even now, almost 5 years later, (at the point in time I am typing this) I continue to practice the art of Rhee Tae Kwon-Do, for without it, I would not be who I am today; a disciplined, confident, and respectful human being.
